Julie Barger
Staff Development Director
jbarger@esu16.org

As I move into this new position of Staff Development Director, I bring 21 years of teaching experience and five years of experience as a staff development consultant.  My first teaching job was at Adams Central Jr./Sr. High School near Hastings where I taught  English.  From there, I moved west to teach English at what was then the Brule Public School and later at Sutherland Public School. I began working for ESU #16 as a staff development consultant five years ago.  My responsibilities have mainly been in the areas of curriculum, instruction, and assessment. I will continue to work in these areas as they relate to state mandates and school improvement plans. I am also the coordinator of the STARS and Carl Perkins grants.

I value the many friends I have made in the past five years working with the ESU #16 schools.  I look forward to continuing to serve you in the area of professional development.

Wow, where does the time go?  This is my sixteenth year with ESU 16.  It’s rather odd, but I have only been in two systems since the beginning of my career.  I was in Genoa Nebraska for 19 years prior to coming to the service unit.  I began my career as a vocal music teacher, became the Media Specialist, and was also an Elementary Principal for several years, all in the Genoa system.  When I started with the service unit, there was only one other computer around, and now you trip over them everywhere in the building.

It has been an amazing journey to see the proliferation of technology both at the office and in our schools.  Who’d a thunk it?  It has been very gratifying to see people embrace the technological changes these past years, and we know by now that this trend will continue and gain steam along the way. I have especially enjoyed working with the SYSOPS (Systems Operators) from all of our member schools.  It is always fun to discover the new “Educational Resources” available for use in the classroom.

When not at the office or on the road, I enjoy motorcycling, singing in a gospel quartet, way cool cars and oh yeah, naps!  I have thoroughly enjoyed my position (well, other than that erate stuff) and look forward to the challenges ahead.  Technology is, like, TOTALLY cool!

It is hard to believe this is my fifth year in staff development at the ESU! I have enjoyed working with so many of you in the areas of curriculum, assessment and school improvement.  My staff development role has recently evolved into the focus of reading K-12, with a special emphasis in Reading First training.   I also serve as the Title I coordinator for our area cooperative schools and administer the Title IIA grant.

My educational background is in elementary.  I graduated from Hastings College and received my graduate degree from Doane College.  My teaching experience spans a variety of grades at both Gothenburg and Sutherland Schools.  Thanks for the opportunity to serve your schools – I look forward to another year!

Staff Development Consultant

I am the "new kid on the block". If only that were true (the kid part)! I am however, the newest addition to the ESU 16 Staff Development group. Before joining Julie and Roxy at the ESU I was a classroom teacher for the past 25 years. I began my career as an educator in 1980 at Ogallala Middle School as a 7th and 8th grade Science teacher. Twenty five years later my teaching experience has included all sizes of schools, from Class D to Class A and all levels of science. I have endorsements in 7-12 life science, earth science, physical science, chemistry, and physics. In May of 2004 I received my Master's in School Counseling. I look forward to working with the ESU schools in the areas of school improvement, the STARS process, as well as the continuing work of both the Math and the Science Pods. I will be coordinating the High Ability Learner services within the unit as well as the Safe and Drug Free Title IV grant.

When I am not at ESU 16 I am home taking care of "the guys". My husband Roric farms south of Sutherland. We have 2 children still at home with us and 2 college students. Garrett, 18 will be graduating from Sutherland Public School this spring and Zach, 15 is a freshman. Both are fabulous young men, good students, and crazy for football and basketball. Joshua, 22 is an intern at Cooper Nuclear Station in Brownsville, NE and will graduate from Iowa State University with a degree in mechanical engineering December of 2006. Winsome, 21 is a senior at UNO with a double major in Spanish and International Business. She will be graduating this May as well.

I look forward to our work together in the coming years.

Deb Frates
Staff Development Secretary

I'm the other "Deb" in Staff Development.  I have been the Staff Development Secretary  since January of 2002.  I've been involved with schools in a variety of ways for 35 years, being married to John Frates.   With John teaching and later as Superintendent and with three kids graduating from South Platte, I know the area schools, teachers and administrators.

Staff Development Secretary is a fun and challenging job. The majority of my time is spent answering the telephone, working on class registrations, workshops, food ordering and spending hours at the copy machine.

It's a pleasure working with everyone involved in all ESU #16 schools.

I joined ESU #16 in 2001 after 24 years as Librarian, Spanish Teacher and Technology Coordinator at Wallace High School. I've enjoyed working with a variety of area teachers on technology integration; and I've learned so much from the staff at ESU #16. I look forward to more projects and opportunities to support the staff developers and the teachers in ESU #16.
