Movies

There were many movies that were played at the Senk's Theatre and Macke's Theatre. Not a lot of movies were played because only so many were made and out here in Mullen we did not get very many.

Some silent movies would have as many as seven reels. When one reel was finished, the audience visited while the next reel was being prepared for showing. Senk's Theatre (Roseberry Building) booked and brought the first ‘talkies' to Mullen. Talkies were movies that had people talking in them unlike the silent movies.

Rawhide Movie PosterSome memorable movies that people remember are Reaching for the Moon, The Keeper of the Bees, The Vagabond Lover, George Washington Slept Here, Desperate Journey, Rawhide, Sergeant York, and Canadian Mountie Police.

The Vagabond Lover , starring Rudy Valee was the first talkie movie. Many people of Mullen still remember this day in June 1930, when they stood in line to climb the stairs to the theatre, to see and hear a movie on screen.

Douglas Fairbanks in Reaching for the Moon Reaching for the Moon , starring Doug Fairbanks was one of the shows being advertised at the time. The ad also stated that a Liberty Loan Reel, Official War Review would conclude the entertainment.

The Keeper Of The Bees starred Gene Stratton Porter, who was popular at the time. A favorite was Rawhide starring Tyrone Power, Susan Hayward, H. Marlowe, and Dean Jager.

On October 22 and 23, 1930, a double feature was here with George Washington Slept Here, with Jack Benny and Ann Sheridan, and Desperate Journey, with Errol Flynn and Ronald Reagan.

Gary Cooper in Sergeant YorkDon Sullivan doesn't remember the names of movies exactly, but he does remember seeing movies with actors such as Roy Rogers, Tom Mix, Gene Autry, and Gary Cooper.
