Hecla
'No Longer Forgotten'

Home Present Day Stories of the Past

Hecla has always interested me. Here is a town that used to exist but now the only thing even visible, is a few bricks of an old foundation of what used to be a house.

My dad works on the railroad so he knows of this place as just another part of the railroad. He was aware that there was at one time a town there so we sometimes go there with a metal detector. We find cans, bottles, and scraps of metal. One thing that we found of significance was an old token from the Hecla store.

The town is no more and just looks like a regular part of the sandhills now. In talking to a lady about Hecla, she mentioned being in, "the house with all of the trees." These trees are still there and they surround the only remaining foundation.

If a person were to be driving along, they would not notice any differences in the scenery. Even if one were to be looking for the town, they would not find it. There used to be a sign that said Hecla, but it was torn down along with the remaining railroad buildings. Remaining of the railroad are some old wooden ties, signals, and a silver building.

Even though the town is no more, the spot it stood is still very enchanting. Being part of the sandhills, it is sure to be beautiful. During the summer, there are leaves on the trees, green grass, and flowers in the fields. There are a few low spots which fill up with water and the birds are plentiful around these places. During the winter and fall, the hills turn a gorgeous rust color.
