Mr. Nicholson's Bio:

My interests in science stretch back to my days as an elementary student. Each day I had to walk home past a small stream. Often I would stop and explore various parts of the stream, lose track of time, and then I'd be late getting home after school which really upset my parents! The consequence of getting home late from school, usually with wet tennis shoes, was rarely an issue I worried about. Instead I was more interested in the water striders, minnows, whirlpools, algae, and crayfish.

As a high school student my course selections as a senior reflected my destiny to have a career in the sciences. Out of a six period day, I was enrolled in four different science classes. This continued as a college student at Allen County Community College in Iowa, KS where I focused on zoology and worked part-time for a local veterinarian. I continued my education at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, IL. There I earned two degrees - a B.S. in Zoology and a B.S. Environmental Biology with a minor in Chemistry.

The opportunity to study immunotoxicology in a Ph. D. program at the University of Nebraska - Medical Center was my next academic endeavor. The class work was fascinating, but the idea of having a career in research was not appealing. My focus turned to education and teaching would provide an opportunity to share my passion for science with others. After two years at the University of Nebraska - Omaha and earning a B.S. in Education I was hired at Omaha Benson to teach Biology, Conceptual Chemistry, and Conceptual Physics. Upon my wife's graduation from Pharmacy school she was hired to work in McCook. I was able to substitute in McCook for a year and then was hired to teach Physical Science. During my time in McCook I worked to obtain an degree in Education specializing in Curriculum and Instruction. This further expanded my approaches to teaching and has greatly enriched my classroom presentations and methodologies.

Another career opportunity for my wife brought us to the North Platte and i have been teaching science for grades 7-12 in Brady. Teaching such a variety of science classes in Brady has been a great experience. It has allowed me to present much of the material i learned about as a high school and college student. Additionally, I am again taking graduate classes to earn a second Master's degree, but this one will be in Biology.
