| My mission
as instructor of visual art education department in the Ogallala Middle School is to provide comprehensive experiences to empower all students to increase understanding and respect for themselves, humankind, and ecology; cultivate interest and involvement in the visual arts; and promote students to take an active role in meaningful and lifelong learning through a curriculum which immerses students in a rich body of content relating to the nature and value of art, interpreting the meaning of art, and technical control of their own art making so they can give form to their own ideas in order to embrace he extraordinary potential of visual art for communication, celebration, and creativity.

| Wrote and received the following Nebraska Arts Council Grants:
· 1991--"Art Aid": a plan to raise awareness of the value and impact that disciplined-based art education could make throughout all grades in Ogallala Public Schools. Artists and teachers involved were Milt Heinrich, Reinholdt Marxhausen, Nancy Childs, Larry Mannlein. · 1992--"Ask Us About Art": production of a booklet of art of students grades kindergarten through eighth. The purpose was to enhance the public awareness and support of the art program in the Ogallala Public Schools. Included were also bits and pieces of information about DBAE. · 1993--"Visions of the Spirit": for support of the NATA Convention in North Platte. Funds used to bring the owners/ curators of the Healing Machines (artist deceased) to North Platte to speak about their acquisition and exhibit the work. Since the Healing Machines were mostly made from very ordinary materials (wire, tin can lids, Christmas lights, beads), a relationship with Reinhold Marxhausen could be made. Marxhausen=s presentation about "Changing the Ordinary to the Extraordinary" was included. · 1994--"More then Meets the Eye": to illustrate the relationship of visual images to myth or legends of a culture and enhance the image of the Native American in the community. Funds supported the storytelling performance of the Thunderbird Theater from the Haskell Indian School and exhibit from Native American Art collection of Brother Simon at the Red Cloud Indian School. · 1996--Artist Residence--Norris Chee: Since our school mascot is the Indian and our community name is after the Oglala Sioux, I invited a Native American artist to be in our school for a week. Working with Native American symbolism, he helped students create shirt designs, spoke to them about the culture of the Native American, and also worked with me to plan and begin a mural painting for the Ogallala Middle School hallway. · 1995-97 and ongoing--Director of Summer Artist in Residence Program in Ogallala: to provide opportunity for residents of the community from 2nd grade through Senior Citizen to work with an artist during the summer. William Schlaebitz served the first two, and LaDell Stonecipher the most recent. Plans are to extend the program to two weeks. · 1997--2001--Working with the School at the Center Project and the Nebraska Arts Council Community Collaborations Project. Both are designed to support the arts in the community and the school. The NAC program advocates the cooperation of agencies within the community to support and bring about arts events and programs. The School at the Center Project is a project which seeks to revitalize rural communities through curriculum and projects developed in the school and reaching out into the community. Other Grants written and received: · 1997-98--Goals 2000--Educate America Act-- received $16,176.00 for integration of art and technology with language arts and social studies involving a total of eight teachers in the Ogallala Middle School. This grant was entitled "The Human Story" and was written in order to provide students opportunities for academic achievement and responsible citizenship, provide students with tools and skills to become lifelong learners, provide access for teachers to programs for continued improvement of their professional skills and the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to instruct and prepare all students for the future, and provide equity access to State and National museum resources through technology. · 1998-2001--Excellence in Education--received $15,000.00--The OPS Art Department received funds to create an "information age learning center" in each of the two art classrooms in the Ogallala School District to serve students in grades 6-12. Learning opportunities have been greatly enriched with the capabilities of computers to access the vast resources on the Internet, allowing student interaction with great works of art, and creating presentations and graphic images to share new learning with others. Teachers are able to organize information on the computer for easier access for students. We are currently revising the curriculum to incorporate a more comprehensive approach. The curriculum revision will incorporate the recommendations of the National Standards for Arts Education. Instructional methods include art criticism, exemplifying the knowledge of design, and evaluation and interpretation of art; aesthetics, considering approaches to art and style, emotional qualities of art work, perceiving what is art; and history, which incorporates cultural context, appreciation of the accomplishments of artists, and movements in art. 2002--Unsung Heroes Award--received $2,000 to match funding for Artists in Residence through the Nebraska Arts Council. 2002--Nebraska Arts Council Grant for $500 to fund the Residency of William Schlaebitz for 2002. 2002-2003--Nebraska Arts Council Grant for $1500 to fund the Residencies of Beth O'Hanlon, Ann Strizek, and Nancy Childs. 2004-2005--Nebraska Arts Council Grant to fund a special project with Ben Darling, Artist in Residence | |
