Grade Level Themes

Each grade level curriculum is designed to focus on an approach which integrates with other subjects such as history, math, science, and language arts. These themes are the "lenses" through which to integrate the academic disciplines into the visual art lessons.

Seeing the World Through Art

Students in the sixth grade are offered a nine week course in visual art as part of the exploratory program. During this time opportunities are given to work with and learn techniques in pencil, watercolor, tempera paint, and clay. Lessons are integrated with Ancient History, Science, Math, and English. Students will understand that art has been an important part of humanity since pre-historic times.

Examining the World Around Us

Seventh grade art is scheduled for nine weeks. During this course students learn about composition and media, as well as art history. The focus is on learning about our community, both it's history and ecology, by studying the artworks that reveal who and what has lived here and who and what lives here now. Students will gain a sense of place. See Standards and Objectives for Section I, Section II

Reflecting on Our World

Eighth grade art is scheduled for nine weeks. During this course students learn about composition and media, as well as art history. The focus is on learning about artists and their ideas. The many roles of artist are examined such as storytellers, recorders, designers, interpreters, messengers, inventors, and planners. "We are connected to one another through time

by our creations, works, images, thoughts and writings.

We communicate to future generations

what we are, what we have been,

hopefully influencing for the better what we will become."
